Magnet Application Eligibility Guide

It is the parents’ responsibility to contact the school for requirements that are school specific (e.g. proficiency tests, auditions, etc.) and submit all required documentation by January 15th.

Please note: All Pre-K and Kindergarten Magnet applications are interest-based only. No entrance criteria required.

A. Basic Criteria for Random Selection Magnets

  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be no greater than “2” for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • No more than 10 unexcused absences for the previous year and 5 unexcused absences for the first semester of the current year.
  • No teacher recommendation will be required.
  • Parents/legal guardians must schedule any required language skills testing for International Studies programs for incoming grades 2-10 by January 15th.
  • FSA scores may not be reviewed as part of the eligibility process.

B. Enhanced Criteria for Designated Random Selection Magnets

  • A minimum of 2.5 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be no greater than “2” for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • No more than 10 unexcused absences for the previous year and 5 unexcused absences for the first semester of the current year.
  • Select schools may require that Algebra I (applying 9th grade), Geometry (applying 10th grade) and or Physical Science (applying 9th grade), Biology (applying 10th grade) (See the approved list on Magnet website) be completed and received credit before the start of the school year for which he/she is applying. Proof of course enrollment or completion must be submitted by January 15th.
  • No teacher recommendation will be required.
  • Parents/legal guardians must schedule any required language skills testing for International Studies programs for incoming grades 2-10 by January 15th.
  • FSA scores may not be reviewed as part of the eligibility process.
  • Enhanced Criteria requirements apply to the following Magnet Schools/Programs:
    • AP Capstone (Advanced Placement) programs – Grades 9
    • Cambridge International programs – Grades 9
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) programs – Grades 9
    • International Studies (IS) / International Education (IE) programs – Grade 9
    • iPrep programs – Grades 9
    • Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy (Grade 9), Maritime & Science Technology Academy (MAST Academy (Grade 9), MAST @ FIU Biscayne Bay Campus (Grade 9), Medical Academy for Science and Technology (MAST @ Homestead) (Grade 9), iPrep Academy (Grade 9), iPrep Academy North 6-12 (Grade 9), TERRA Environmental Research Institute (Grade 9), BEAT @ North Miami Beach SHS (Grade 9), COAST @ Cutler Bay SHS (Grade 9)

C. Visual & Performing Arts Magnets (VPA)

Parents/legal guardians must schedule auditions/interviews by January 15th. Please note that each VPA school/program may vary in protocols and procedures for holding Please check with each school to verify requirements and procedures.

  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be no greater than “2” for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • No more than 10 unexcused absences for the previous year and 5 unexcused absences for the first semester of the current year.
  • Placement is based on audition/interview results.
  • No teacher recommendation will be required.
  • FSA scores may not be reviewed as part of the eligibility process.

D. Interest-Based Magnet Schools/Programs

  • Admission is interest-based only.
  • All Pre-K and Kindergarten Magnet applications are interest-based only. No entrance criteria required.
  • No teacher recommendation/prerequisites will be required.
  • Interest-based only admissions apply to the following Magnet Schools/Programs:

      • STArts Dance/Kinetic Movement (Science, Technology, and Arts Exploration & Innovation)

      • STArts Visual/Graphic Arts (Science, Technology, and Arts Exploration & Innovation)
    • Citrus Grove K-8
      • STArts2 – Digital Music Production
    • Thomas Jefferson Biscayne Gardens K-8 Academy

    • Bowman Ashe/Doolin K-8 Academy

Continued Enrollment Guidelines: Program participation is contingent on individual school student/parent contract agreement to be signed once student is invited and accepted into a Magnet school/program.
